Yak wool is so soft that I forget I’m wearing a turtleneck. It’s naturally fuzzy so no need to do a brushed effect - brushed cashmere is at least halfway to pilling when you buy it. Not yak.

Once you’ve eliminated trench coats for inferior fabric, there are a few structural details to check.

The collar frames the face. Getting as close as possible to Burberry is my goal for classic trench coats. Flowy or avant garde trench coats have separate conventions.

I prefer having epaulettes, but they’re not as important as the shape of the collar.

The gun flap is a detail that a lot of designs get wrong. It’s rare to find a true fashion faux pas, but here we are. The gun flap’s purpose is to seal the lapel in place once it’s buttoned all the way up.

Therefore, the gun flap needs to be sewn on the side with the buttons. The side with the button holes is on top, then the gun flap covers the upper corner.

I don’t think this detail is widely understood. Maybe it’s not a deal breaker for everyone. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

The back mini cape is designed to move water away from the body. This design detail also adds to the polish of the backside. Trench coats are generally made of cotton, a fabric which often has the grace of crumpled paper. The mini cape gives the back the appearance of sleek structure.

How great are the Riley from Agolde! I love the darker wash that’s on sale. Straight jeans are wider now than they were a year ago, so you’ll find narrower ones like mine and ones that are a bit fuller, too.

I love the long line they create from the waist down to the hem.

It’s Black Friday! Sort of.

I get a lot of questions about Jenni Kayne, and the similarities to Everlane always struck me. For Black Friday, I’m sharing these twins with you so you can decide.

I prefer the design of Everlane’s barrel sweats. The rest depend on styling preferences. Jenni Kayne tends to have boxier shapes: the torso is wider. If you love that oversized look, there won’t be an exact substitute. But some people might actually want to go for a relaxed look rather than really, truly oversized, and that’s where Everlane wins.

A lot of the difference comes down to photography. Jenni Kayne’s models tend to wear the cardigan without a layer underneath, and Everlane’s photos look like more practical work outfits.

Here are my favorite jeans, along with ones I’m eyeing. The Agolde style that’s selected is the same cut as the ones what I’m wearing, but the wash is a little darker than mine, fyi.

I’m going for straight or slightly wide cuts that balance ease and polish, freshness and timelessness. They look together enough for a casual workplace and also effortless enough for hanging out backstage.

DIY leather care can be daunting. The last thing we want is to ruin our nice bags and shoes.

Even if I think dark clothes are ready to wear, a few spins with the lint roller always always surprise me.

Lint rollers are great for sturdy fabrics: wovens (think suiting) or tough T-shirts. I wouldn’t risk it on knits or delicates.

The sticky surface can pull away at the filaments that make up the yarns, causing a sweater to fuzz and then pill.

For delicates and knits, I use a kitchen glove. Its grippy surface gives me just enough pull to gather the lint, but it doesn’t harm the material.

I am pretty obsessed with kitchen gloves. They’re not always easy to find. Favorites get discontinued. It’s tough out there!

They’re indispensable for more than just washing the dishes.

That Massimo Dutti trench is a need, not a want lol. It’s beautifully done, the gun flap is on the correct side, and a very stylish friend of mine recommended it to me. I’m surprised it’s going on sale.

I picked out a few cropped trenches which are also beyond, and an excellent barn jacket with a proper leather collar.

Tweed flows from day to night, as long as we don’t take it too seriously. For day, I wear it with jeans or leggings.

SIZING: I am hearing that Blondo runs small

When it comes to picking what to wear, I like to lead with the occasion. Wet winters demand waterproof shoes, sure, but there are also two other circumstances I like to address:

1. ERRAND SHOES: for going down the block and back. Easy on/off and excellent in fun colors, these shoes excuse you from finagling your storm shoes on or figuring out which winter shoes match your outfit. They’re not leather, so you also don’t have to clean them after you get home.

2. ALL-DAY SHOES: take you from morning to night in the rain, so these are all waterproof, and they have good traction. I’m hoping you’ll find a comfortable pair here. For waterproof leather shoes <$150, go with darker color ways.

3. PART-TIMERS: we get tired of winter at some point and crave something more pretty, snuggly, or sleek. On a drizzly day, I go for patent leather. If the shoes have a leather sole, I recommend getting a sole protector put on by a cobbler.

Can we find elevated summer basics at J. Crew? Overall, I was pretty impressed by the linen pieces. The two short-sleeved tops I saw are really, really great, actually – the basics that you want anchoring your outfits.

They took risks with the design. The popover top has a beautifully sculpted collar and a deep neck. Those are features I’d expect to see from a luxury designer. I love the wide hem of the sleeve, too.

I love ruffles, but they don’t really suit my sense of humor. They’re too unabashedly frilly for my personality. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!)

But the earthiness of the linen balances out the ruffles, turning them into a more considered, mature accent. I was very impressed. It’s a lot easier to sell cookie cutter cutesy clothes than pieces that challenge convention. There’s something really J. Crew about a linen ruffle.

To elevate your everyday, some structure is key. Their flimsy linen vests lack structure, but the collar of the ruffled linen shirt will add polish to your look.

My morning skincare routine!

Take or leave the snail mucin. Vitamin C is also not quite essential. The most important steps are the two sunscreens.

I use both physical (mineral) and chemical. I let one soak, then layer the other. You can use two layers of the same sunscreen - doubling up increases the coverage in case some spots are too thin in one layer.

If rayon leaves you confused and disappointed, stop by a Madewell so you can touch what I recommend to avoid. Their rayon dresses are coarse and feel loosely woven. The prices are about double Zara’s, and Zara has better quality rayon: smoother and more densely woven.

There are further concerns such as labor practices and environmental implications, and each garment needs to be evaluated so it suits your requirements. I can only speak of fabric quality, which ultimately promotes longer wear, which is what we all want.

Is the Tom Ford belt worth it at $950? I do observe a jump in quality from the $370 Nili Lotan belt, but I don’t know that this refinement is worth $580.

Sometimes, a more casual belt makes a stronger point than something in the middle. Let’s say you’re wearing a maxi satin slip dress. The $60 Boden belt would serve as clear contrast between formal and casual, ultimately adding ease and off-duty cool to the look. The $90 J. Crew belt would be ambiguous: it’s neither refined enough to be an evening belt, nor is it casual enough to contrast with the dress.

I should add that the Tom Ford belt is from the men’s section. The smallest size is 85cm, which is what I wear a lot. I’m a size 26 in jeans. This belt aside, the men’s section has a lot of great options. Hi, Todd Snyder belts.
