May we all celebrate so much that we need flats!

Mine are old old Prada flats. If I didn’t already have them, I would get these pointy flats from Stuart Weitzman. Or the ones with the pearls bc I wear patent leather shoes when it drizzles.

Also wearing an H&M bubble skirt and the Italic Emma relaxed turtleneck in ivory, size small. My tights are also size small.

I’m wearing the Wolford tights, which are great, but the Hanes Silk Reflections also are

I’m 5’7” and usually wear size 0-4 or 26 in jeans.

SIZING: I am hearing that Blondo runs small

When it comes to picking what to wear, I like to lead with the occasion. Wet winters demand waterproof shoes, sure, but there are also two other circumstances I like to address:

1. ERRAND SHOES: for going down the block and back. Easy on/off and excellent in fun colors, these shoes excuse you from finagling your storm shoes on or figuring out which winter shoes match your outfit. They’re not leather, so you also don’t have to clean them after you get home.

2. ALL-DAY SHOES: take you from morning to night in the rain, so these are all waterproof, and they have good traction. I’m hoping you’ll find a comfortable pair here. For waterproof leather shoes <$150, go with darker color ways.

3. PART-TIMERS: we get tired of winter at some point and crave something more pretty, snuggly, or sleek. On a drizzly day, I go for patent leather. If the shoes have a leather sole, I recommend getting a sole protector put on by a cobbler.

What to look for in boots with heels:
👢HEEL PLACEMENT
The heel aligns with your center of gravity – if you drew a stick figure of your leg, the heel would follow.

👢SCULPTED SHAPE
The back should be curved to cup your foot, especially important for taller boots because you’ll need more stability.

👢SMOOTH CONSTRUCTION
No ridges or wrinkles around the back of the foot and the toes, where there are inner layers to support the shape of the boot. Inner structure should be as close to invisible as possible.

👢SMOOTH SEAMS
No puckers or stretching. If there are top stitches, they should be straight.

👢👢BONUS
The bigger the pieces of leather, the more costly the boot. Smaller pieces of leather cost much less. It’s harder to find larger pieces of leather that are flawless.

If a boot has a lot of seam lines, make sure they’re doing something for the design. Otherwise, it can look like a cost-cutting measure.

Also, examine the quality of the leather both in the front and on the back. Compare. See if you find more veining and flaws on the back of the boot. The back is where less expensive boots may have lower quality leather pieces. It may vary per pair of boots.

Here’s footwear from my first order from Massimo Dutti!

I’m wearing my current favorites in the video: the Frame Le Slim Palazzo jeans, the Banana Republic wide ponte pants in brown, and THAT BR cropped white button down that is on heavy rotation.

SIZING: I wear a 38.5 in Gucci, Prada, and Chloe. I wear 8.5 in US shoes, so I ordered a US 9. They shipped a European 40, and it’s a size too big. Going to exchange, and I’ll keep you posted. Even though these shoes are too big, they’re comfortable and not awkward on me.

They have to be right for your particular situation. Are you hiking in the snow? Are you commuting in your own car? Are you waiting for a bus outside? Are you just visiting a snowy city, and you’re not used to ice? Or are you an ice queen?

The more demanding the situation, the more I’d focus on performance over refinement. I prefer boots that look as rugged as they are rather than ones that try to hide it. I love a boldly rugged boot with a touch of luxe elsewhere in the outfit.

If you are in the city, chances are, that slush contains salt. To minimize salt damage, wipe the slush off your boots when you get home – or a few times a week.

Espadrilles aren’t meant to last more than a season, so it’s a good thing they’re made from canvas and jute. I don’t recommend wearing them for long walks; they’re an upgrade from flip flops, basically.

What’s easier to believe: that the hottest shoe is an $850 mesh flat OR that Alaïa has a commercial hit?

Azzedine Alaïa notoriously went off the Paris fashion calendar, kept editors waiting, and slammed Anna Wintour. While he always had a cadre of dedicated fans, his was more of a cult following.

It’s striking that we’re getting an It-shoe from Alaïa; historically, the house was known for body conscious clothes and not leathergoods. Current creative director Pieter Mulier scored a big win with the mesh flats.

Each summer, luxury houses offer up entry-level casual shoes, each with a proven shortcut in construction; espadrilles and slides have relatively inexpensive soles and simple uppers, but they’re accepted in a luxury interpretation. The mesh flat can also be simply executed.

It’s not that these shoes lack the hallmarks of luxury footwear. The materials and craftsmanship are at the highest commercial levels given the task. It’s just that the scope of the shoes, or the level of ambition, is lower than that of heels or dress shoes.

Is it ridiculous? Sure, but there’s also a method to the frivolity.

To get the look, I recommend looking for design elements that differ from Alaïa, from the lace of Loeffler Randall to the square toe of the Target shoes

No one ever accused me of shying away from luxury goods. I have a long, happy history with Miu Miu in particular and a weakness for their shoes.

I became aware of these boat shoes via a text notification making fun of them. In my heart, I believed I would come to their defense.

That did not happen.

These shoes are bulbous. The painted patina looks awkward; it’s not the high quality Berluti treatment, and it’s not the subtle G.H. Bass approach.

I get that a bunch of work and fine materials went into these shoes, and I applaud the absence of flashy branding. A part of me thinks they’ll offer arch support and feel great on the foot.

But hard pass, especially since our affordable options are actually the authentic inspirations for this shoe, and they look relevant today.

The Chanel slingback have a sleeker toe box than their ballet flats. They’re elevated, but the block heel is potentially comfortable for hours.

I love the half d’Orsay: the outside of the shoe upper attaches to the sole like a regular slingback, but the inside attaches like a d’Orsay shoe, which is open in the arch of the foot.

Do preloved shoes sound sus to you? How do you sanitize your shoes? Or not?

When disinfecting shoes, there’s a lot of room for personal comfort. You can use Lysol wipes, rubbing alcohol, a hydrogen peroxide solution, white vinegar, leather soap, bleach, fungicides, or a UV box or UV wand, to reach inside each shoe.

Thiocyanomethylthio benzothiazole (TCMTB) is a biocide used by tanneries.

You can get really technical.

Or take comfort in the fact that fungi won’t be around forever, as long as the shoes are away from a warm, humid environment.

Without discounting the importance of safety, I do want to say social media can get too swept up in disinfection, the performance of it, the drama, the fear. I want to give options and also ground them in perspective.

My shoes are not as clean as an operating table. They’re as clean as I need them to be.
