Are you prepared to grab and go in the event of an emergency or natural disaster? According to a 2023 FEMA survey, half of Americans are not. Some have assembled disaster supplies (48%) or made a plan (37%), but the least common actions were planning with neighbors and getting involved in their community.

As a garage expert who has worked in hundreds of Northern California garages / homes, I can tell you at least 70% of the garages we’ve worked in DO NOT have an emergency supply section. Or if so, it’s minimal at best. Moving forward, this is a topic I will be recommending to our families.

The So Cal wildfires and other recent natural disasters serve as a reminder that one of our most important tasks this new year is ensuring your most important documents, memories and items are ready to go. In an instant. And that you’re prepared with food, water, first-aid and other necessities.

Being prepared does not take a lot of time or effort...but IT DOES require your attention to get there.

Over the last couple days in stories I’ve been sharing how I’ve scanned and organized important papers and how you can do the same. I’ll continue sharing more on this topic as well as digitizing your photos and preparing supplies for an emergency.

Meanwhile, one of our favorite weather-tight bin collections is 25% off. I’ve noticed The Container Store generally puts these on sale after a natural disaster. They have super strong latches and a urethane foam seal to ensure your belongings remain safe from moisture, dust and pests. I like the file box which is a great bin for placing important papers, passports and more so you have something to grab and go.

The most wonderful time of the year = post-holiday decluttering!

If you’re feeling the urge to declutter (aka - tear your house apart), you’re not alone.

Decluttering is a natural pattern in life as we head into a new year. As we come out of a season of abundance and one where we filled our homes with lots of new items - whether we wanted them or not (lol!) - the feeling of overwhelm / where to begin is real.

This is how a certified professional organizer successfully declutters in my own home.

The goal is to make this process simple. Not complicated.

1. MAKE A LIST: Don’t jump in right away or without a clear plan. Start by making a list and make it thorough. You can even break down your spaces into sub-spaces. For example, your kitchen can be broken down into drawers, cabinets, the pantry, the fridge and freezer, etc.

2. TAKE ONE SPACE AT A TIME: And work on it to completion. I mean, all the way done! Do not move onto another space without finishing what you started.

3. BE REALISTIC: How long can you work or how much energy do you have in the tank to work on something today? If you only have time or energy for a small set of drawers, choose that. If you have time and energy for a larger space, like your closet, focus on that. And again … to completion.

4. TAKE NOTES: Are you getting rid of old dingy towels? Make a note of how many you need and then place the order. Are you getting rid of expired medicine or pantry foods? Make a note and purchase them. Do you need better drawer cabinet or closet organizers? Make a note take measurements and then purchase.

5. CLEAN: Clean as you go or at the end of processing your entire space.

6. GET RID OF YOUR ITEMS: Don’t let your decisions linger. Let them go and drop them off. See it through to the end and honor all the work that you accomplished.
