As I sat down to research our next style icon, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy (CBK), I started thinking about what makes one iconic? I kept coming back to the way individuals impact our lives and how they challenge the narrative. Walking into my first college art class, the teacher was blasting Janice Joplin and dancing. I had never encountered a teacher that challenged my narrative of "what a teacher should be". JB's paintings were as colorful and wild as her dancing and she was the catalyst to my exploration of art. She's gone now, but the mark she made on my life will always be felt and appreciated. I'm certain there are many other students who would say the same. To me, it's this lasting memory that makes an impact and creates an iconic figure. Bessette-Kennedy was just that. Whether you realize it or not, her minimalist approach to design and style was the catalyst for so much in the fashion industry. She challenged the industries narrative of a wedding gown with her slip dress. She created sleek looks that left room for strategic accessories and textural pieces that added interest.
