What do you look for in a leather jacket? I think longevity is key for most people. Very few of us are looking for a leather jacket to wear for just a few seasons, especially at Phoebe Philo, Totême, and Khaite price points. Little things change in fashion, and they make our staples look dated, even if we pick so-called classic styles. A bomber jacket might sound like a reasonable choice, but the length, the volume, the collar all change, making this jacket look like it belongs in a particular era. These signals are even more amplified if they come from a particular aesthetic. A detail like a wide hip belt will cement a jacket into 2024. It will look dated more decisively and sooner than the changes in proportions, whose cycles are longer. If only one brand went with this detail, the resulting jacket (or series of jackets) would then stand out and potentially transcend the trend cycle. Instead, we see this particular belt across a bunch of labels in this one space. It’s become a micro trend. And Zara already launched a handbag with a strap that’s similar to these hip belts.
