Please please test any heirloom or thrifted pieces before using them, especially for hot food or drinks. Lead is a heavy metal that can wreak havoc on the body if ingested and can be found in many vintage pieces like frosted glass, hand painted dishes, toys, and more! A simple test kit can help determine if the pieces you have are even safe to be touching let alone using. As a rule of thumb we don’t use vintage dishes to eat or drink from. If a piece tests positive for lead we keep it in a glass cabinet for display purposes only and make sure it isn’t being used or handled. Better safe than sorry, and always good to keep in mind that the EPA started regulated lead in the 1970s so pieces after this time period tend to be safer. A lead testing kit is inexpensive and I’ve included the exact one I used below. Make sure to swab the inside and outside of the item. Not all test kits are created equally, but I tested this one on some items I knew contained lead and some I knew didn’t to make sure they were accurate. LTKStyleTip LTKHome LTKSummerSales
