May was a fun month for reading these books on Amazon that I snagged. Books from this past month included Bubble in the Sun: The Florida Boom of the 1920s and How It Brought on the Great Depression, The Last Pirate of New York: A Ghost Ship, a Killer, and the Birth of a Gangster Nation, The Cost of These Dreams: Sports Stories and Other Serious Business, and Three-Ring Circus: Kobe, Shaq, Phil, and the Crazy Years of the Lakers Dynasty. Out of these books, The Cost of These Dreams was my favorite. Author Wright Thompson is a magician when it comes to storytelling. He’s an incredible writer that can take make any topic interesting. He reminds me of some of my author favorite authors in Michael Lewis, Malcolm Gladwell, and Cal Newport. In Cost of These Dreams, Thompson shows you the sacrifices top athletes make to become great. Bubble in the Sun pulls back the curtain on how the Florida real estate boom of the 1920s pushed the US in the Great Depression. In The Last Pirate of New York, pirate Albert Hicks was on a mission to kill as many people as he could. With the help of the authorities and the local population, Hicks was eventually brought to justice. But not before becoming America’s first gangster. Three Ring Circus takes you on a wild ride. It’s the story of the Laker’s dynasty from 1996-2004. Kobe, Phil, and Shaq were a cast of characters that never disappointed in terms of attention. Whether it was Kobe’s selfishness or Phil’s focus on zen or Shaq’s spending habits, the media had plenty to chew on during these years. What books did you read last month? Any that you recommend?
