Sandals are best for those with regular to narrow feet. Fits true to size otherwise (I have on EU40)

Hands up if you’ve ever found yourself coveting an item for *months* (maybe even years 👀), only to finally buy it and find out it just doesn’t work for you? 🙋🏻‍♀️

It highlights how important the actual “try-on” is… as part of discovering what works for you is trial and error, the other part is just how the item is cut (a detail that can sometimes be tricky to judge on first glance). And, to avoid wasting time mulling over an item that will never end up working for you, it also highlights how useful it can be to check out the item - or a similar piece if it’s not readily available - ahead of time.

On paper, these sandals were everything I was looking for; minimalist design, dainty straps with a low heel, in an easy-going slip on style. But what I wasn’t anticipating, was just how narrowly cut they are. I’m not sure how obvious it is from the try-on, but I had quite serious overhang on both sides - a common problem when trying to buy “dainty” sandals when you have wide feet 😩

While I lamented the fact that these were not right for me, it was an easy “no” because no matter how much I’d try to make them work, I’d never feel good wearing these sandals. And if I’ve learnt anything over the years, it’s that these are the things we end up avoiding wearing at all.

TLDR: basically, don’t settle for things that don’t make *you* feel *your* best, and if you can, try items out early so you can rule out options that will never be a winner for you.

Ten ways to wear… yellow 🌞

If you’re following trends, or just keeping an eye on new arrivals, then you’ve probably seen that creamy butter yellow hue just about everywhere. To me this reads as an interesting neural which plays well with other muted tones - an easy swap if you’re someone who likes to wear creams or whites with a bit of warmth to them.

For those curious about the bolder end of the spectrum, personally I feel like these sorts of yellows tend to work best when worn more as a focal piece with other easy neutrals, or amped up a notch further with other brights.

For my last transitional season outfit idea, I wanted to end with a classic combo that I often lean on. Items in my closet that I can rely on to always make me feel good, using small details to add that *personal* element.

It’s these little flourishes that signal the formality and mood of your outfit, but also define it beyond a cookie cutter formula. For example, with the sweater, I sized up one because I personally love a slouchier fit - this to me helps to create a bit more visual width across the shoulders so I can bring some balance into my outfit. Also, tucking in the knit signals that I want to be comfortable, but also appear somewhat refined so I’m using simple styling to inject that sense into the outfit.

My hair is quite voluminous (honestly learning how to get the Dyson Airwrap to work for me has been game changing 😮‍💨), so I didn’t want too much fuss with my jacket. I went with a longer style car coat which has a clean silhouette with minimal detailing.

The jewellery I chose isn’t “loud”, but it isn’t that simple either. There’s texture and a slight weightiness to the pieces that feel hand picked just for this look.

With the intention of adding in one design-led element, I focused in on my bag. This has a unique cylindrical shape and organic pebble closure, something that feels like a bit of a statement given how dialled down the rest of this outfit’s elements are. Had it been in a bold colour, it would feel quite loud, in contrast to the rest of the look, whereas the soft greige hue feels muted, and somewhat chill.

Today I’m blending two different styling techniques that I’ll often use when getting dressed. The first is adding in that element of texture, which I talked through yesterday. Outside of interesting silhouettes, this is a key way to add in visual depth to your outfit, especially when going monochrome like I have here. The cotton trousers are quite a matte, flat fabrication, so adding in the quilted vest and patent shoes helps to lift the look.

I personally *love* monochrome outfits like this because having that singular block of colour stretches the silhouette and gives you that sense of length, but also, it creates an impactful look when worn with a contrasting (long) jacket. This helps to create that long and lean look, which I focused on here in particular because as much as I love a cropped pant, that can make you appear shorter if you don’t pair them with a heeled shoe.

Final detail is the cognac bag, the colour of which complements the rest of the outfit and the chunky chain straps adds in an adorned element.

There are three core elements of your outfit that can create a sense of visual interest, and today we’re focusing on *texture*. I often tend to seek out items that have some kind of tactile quality to them, because incorporating these into your outfit will instantly lift your look.

If you’re opting primarily for smooth or flat fabrics, you outfit can come off as less dimensional so by using texture you add depth, plus it’s a great tool to bring your outfit to life 👏🏻

For this particular look I’ve paired a textured knit dress, an organic jute jacket, and a woven leather bag.

Today I thought we could focus on another way to make a simple outfit feel interesting. We’re starting with a *very* simple base of a tee and jeans, which I’ve opted for both in white, to create a singular block of colour because visually this elongates the body (we love a visual illusion round here! 🙋🏻‍♀️).

Adding the bright shoe serves as that “pop” which the eye is instantly drawn to. If you’re familiar with @tibi ’s “one, ton, or none”, this approach to dressing where you have one loud element leans firmly into the concept of “one” - such a great way to simplify how we bring colour into our outfits.

If you’re just choosing to inject that sense of “one” through accessories, IMO shoes are the most impactful approach, though you can do this through jewellery, your bag, scarves, glasses or even makeup.

Transitional season capsule edit with just 10 pieces, let’s go 🤗

One of the reasons why I think the concept of a capsule wardrobe sometimes gets a bad rap is that the “idealized” version of these that are often shared online are primarily quite basic pieces in neutrals like white, grey and black. Sure, great for maximizing versatility, but it can come off feeling a little homogenized or lacking in individuality in the long run.

This month I wanted to remind you that capsules are more fun when you include a smattering of colour (whatever this means, for you!), as well as elements of texture and shape. Basics don’t have to be boring 🤭
