How to paint IKEA furniture so it lasts! We used IKEA Billy bookcases (particle board) and Havsta cabinets (solid wood) for our built-ins. How it’s done: -Lightly sand the furniture and wipe clean. I used a 240 grit sanding block and wiped dust with a microfiber cloth. -Prepare the surface for paint by applying a durable, water-based paint primer and allow it to dry for at least 48 hours. -Use a cabinetry paint roller to apply your interior latex paint. The paint color we used on our built-ins 1905 Green by Magnolia Home. This last step is optional, but if you really want to avoid the possibility of paint chipping on high traffic furniture then here’s what you should do… -Use a thick brush to apply a water-based polyurethane in a clear coat finish!
