Checking in for another Tuesday Tip! Today I am talking about this history and use of the Lewis bag, an amazingly simple tool used to crush ice for cocktails. It’s really my go to option for crushing ice because it’s inexpensive, doesn’t take up much space, and is super simple to use!
The Lewis Bag is named after its inventor, William H. Lewis, who patented the design in 1918. The bag is made of sturdy canvas and has a drawstring closure. It was originally used by bartenders and ice delivery men in the early 20th century, as well as in homes before those amazing 1950’s electric ice crushers. Today, the Lewis bag is still used by professional bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts to make crushed ice for drinks, especially in classic cocktails like the Mint Julep and the Daiquiri.
To use the Lewis Bag you will want to simply
1. fill the bag with ice cubes
2. close the drawstring
3. place the bag on a sturdy surface
4. pound with a mallet or rolling pin until the ice is crushed to the desired consistency.
1. Enjoy!
