-Hi, I saw you (walking away yesterday with my plant in your hand). Maybe there was a misunderstanding? I know you’ll return it to me today.

This response gives them the benefit of the doubt and assumes that the person might have taken the plant unintentionally or due to a misunderstanding. It’s polite and respectful and avoids accusatory language and maintains a friendly tone. You also set a clear expectation and directly state that you expect them to return it to you today. All of these elements make it more likely to elicit a positive response from the person.

-Hi, I have footage of you on my alarm, taking my flowers. I expect you to return them today.

This response is direct and clear, leaving no room for ambiguity. Referencing the footage as proof strengthens your claim to have the stolen item returned and sets a deadlines, establishing a boundary. It also avoids unnecessary explanations or apologies demonstrating confidence, clarity, and a firm stance on the matter.

-Hi, thou shalt not steal isn’t selective, I expect my (flowers) returned today.

This response directly addresses the theft and the expectation for the return of the flowers. By quoting “thou shalt not steal” you are appealing to a moral principle implying that the theft is wrong and unacceptable. Setting a deadline also establishes a clear expectation and boundary, showing that you are serious about the matter and that you expect them to take responsibility for their actions.

And for those curious, the mums are home safe now - sharing the story on stories.
