I love a matching set!

When I spied these matching grey pieces, I knew I’d like the monochromatic look they’d create. I feel pulled together when I wear one color head to toe. It’s flattering on everyone. Make it grey – in a lightweight melange fabric with a nod to flannel – and I’m all in. The shirt is a yes, but I’m debating between the straight, slim pant (not my usual go-to) and a wide leg pleated style (ordered and on its way to me). Maybe it will be a yes to both!

I prefer a maxi length, but a midi or even knee length would work fine depending on your height. It’s the overall silhouette from the narrowness of the skirt that is appealing. ⁠

This is the old denim shirt I talked about yesterday. From the Gap, must be ten-plus years old. It’s a keeper and just gets better with age. Today, I’m styling it with another classic – Levi’s 501 jeans. The washes don’t match and that’s fine. I think they complement each other in vibe. From this point as a base, the styling options are many. Paired with yet another classic – Chanel ballet flats – the look is slightly elevated. I wore this to dinner the other night with a black blazer. The whole outfit felt very good on. Very much my personal style.

Trying on different jeans with denim shirts this week on A NOTE ON STYLE.

Today, I’m wearing a high rise, wide leg silhouette from MOTHER. I’ve had them for years and regardless of styles that come and go, I’ll keep these. They’re insanely comfortable (with stretch!) and no matter if I fluctuate a few pounds, they still fit. I almost always wear them with a tucked in shirt, blouse or cropped sweater to keep the focus on the high waist. The wider leg calls for a longer length meaning they’ll be paired with a slight heel for an elongated look. For those saying this style only works on tall figures, I say give them a try. There’s a reason MOTHER has them available in PETITE sizes and a bestseller.

Denim shirts are very on trend this season but have been a staple in my closet for years. I have one in a faded wash from ten years ago (similar) and just purchased a clean, darker wash style from Madewell. This is not an area I need to spend a lot on. The fit, wash, and softness of the fabric are what’s important. The Madewell shirt is true to size (wearing a medium) and under $100.

Tod's sneakers, Bottega bag...oldies but goodies. The Bottega Andiamo bag is still readily available in numerous sizes and colors. I love this funky color (Acorn if I remember correctly) that looks so much more interesting with everything it's paired with. Adding one piece that's slightly off is a styling bit I use often.⁠

For most of September and October in California, the best way for me to feel like I’m dressing for the season is to wear a dark palette in lightweight fabrics. I'll reach for cottons, silk voile, and semi-sheer wools to pull together looks that create a fall vibe. ⁠

One silhouette I love to work in is an elbow length sleeve top. The one I'm wearing is new from Vince. The fit and weight are perfection. I'll probably get a backup since I'll wear it so much. I also bought it in brown which looks very berry like on the website but is more rust brown in person. ⁠

The Theory black cotton skirt is a summer purchase and still available. It's very lightweight and perfect for warm autumn days.⁠

I like all black with a contrasting shoe color. Here with one of my favorite shoe purchases from spring/summer - the Miu Miu boat shoe in weathered white. Splurgy for a boat shoe but to me special enough and crazy comfortable. No regrets.⁠

I’m always reminding myself I don’t need to buy any more black pieces, but when I see something new that would actually update my looks, I’ll reconsider. These four pieces are in that category.

After saving them to a mood board, it immediately became apparent that I’m into black with gold hardware. From the subtle rivets on Bally’s mocassin loafer to the bold tip on a Khaite belt (also in ivory – beautiful!), I like the bit of flash.

I guess you could also point out that my focus here is on leather. I love a leather jacket that mimics a silhouette I reach for often in a tailored fabric. It’s easy to imagine the styling options since I already have it down. Here, my favorite is a cropped, smart option from Altuzarra. Reminds me of the Nili Lotan jackets I wear a lot. Plus those knot buttons are super chic. A little extra gold on a black bag looks modern too. The ring detail (and detachable chain) on Prada’s pouch hits all the right marks.

COMFORT AND STYLE WHILE FLYING

I have a couple of uniforms for air travel. The one I refer to most relies on a tried and true three rule plan. First, I start with a monochrome base. For me, that’s usually black. Nothing makes the cut if it isn’t infinitely comfortable. Every piece must also be versatile enough to wear with several other looks once I’ve reached my destination.

Second, I always wear the bulkiest shoes. Most trips are carry-on which is made possible by wearing the shoes that take up the most space. If I’m traveling to Europe, a lug sole boot has been a given in the rotation for years. They’re essential for navigating uneven cobblestone streets.

The ONE jacket I want for FALL now.

I have a few key pieces in mind that will layer nicely into my wardrobe. The idea is to keep my closet classic but fresh. The Field Coat/Barn Jacket is the essential piece for the season and beyond. I like it worn with everything from a casual tee and jeans to a feminine flowing dress (Prada).

Some are dressier than others with the addition of a fur collar or polished fabric (Nili Lotan). I just ordered the leather collared one from COS and sized way down. This is not an area I want to spend a lot on. It just needs to feel good on, in a color that’s flattering and a fit that looks forward. Slightly oversized is the way to go. If the COS doesn’t work out, Ill try the one pictured above from Everlane or ME + EM.

FALL MOOD

September is the month of a mental transition into fall. This is true especially in California where the weather hasn’t changed much, but my mind set has. I evaluate my closet relocating clothes that feel like summer to the back while bringing forward a fall palette. I want to see that color story first when I’m deciding what to wear.

Over the years I’ve parted with heavier pieces that were rarely worn (sadly) keeping just the things I’d need when traveling to cold weather destinations. It’s still a substantial lot since my favorite time to travel to Europe is offseason – winter preferably. I’ll talk about what those pieces are in another post…a capsule wardrobe reserved for travel.

But for most of September and October in California, I’ve learned the best way for me to feel like I’m dressing for the season is to wear a fall palette in lightweight fabrics. This year, I’m leaning heavily into the warm khaki tones, ochre, and camel with black, brown and ivory.

For my FALL STYLE LOOKS, I’d like to layer in soft pieces – a dress, skirt and definitely a shirt. Looking at the SS25 collections, this feeling isn’t going away anytime soon.

Toteme’s shirt is the vibe. It’s got the shape I’m after. Equally important is the fabric – a semi sheer organza or voile for example. Perfect for the warmer fall months.

I’m wearing a TWP voile shirt (also have it in navy and love it with dark denim) and old AGOLDE jeans. I’d layer a structured field coat over this look and ground it with suede flats.

The skirts I’m eyeing include one from Toteme and Loulou Studio in tan or blush pink. I’d wear them with dark khaki, ochre, or any sort of off color for visual interest.

OPPOSITES ATTRACT

A commenter asked for examples of the loose dresses I mentioned in yesterday’s post. Looking at how Prada styled the jacket is the jumping off point for inspiration. Having the strong contrast of a structured utilitarian piece paired with a soft dress creates an interesting look. The casual mocassin loafer anchors it all.

Inspiration From Italy

I’m easing back into my routine after traveling in Italy. Inevitably along the way, there were moments of style inspiration which I mentally packed up to revisit when I got home. The strongest of those moments came from Cortina, a mountain town in the Dolomites where the chic crowd perfected the art of dressing down. Not a label in sight. The Italians get it. Instead men and women wore what appeared to be well-loved personal favorites -suede or leather boat shoes with pants short enough to glimpse tan ankles, tasseled loafers with bright socks, and a head turning amount of stylish barn coat/field jacket toppers in every shade of green. These were paired with relaxed jeans, collared shirts casually tucked in, or loose dresses. The most stylish women to my eye wore hair in an almost messy gathered ponytail, a swipe of lipstick to complement a bare face with minimal if any makeup, and interesting jewelry.

SCARVES ARE ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA

The weather has finally allowed me to venture into my scarf drawer. I love wearing scarves and treasure the collection I’ve accumulated over the years – many acquired while traveling. I think they’re also a great item to gift. From soft silk squares to fringed cashemere, there’s a style for every person and need. A few of my favorite silk squares are the solid Margault from The Row (wearing in gray) and the graphic patterns from Toteme. Both have an excellent hand and tie well. When I want something larger and warmer, but not bulky, I’ll turn to one in cashmere/silk. These have a number of versatile styling options. The polka dot or paisley prints from Saint Laurent are long standing classics. I also love a heavier knit scarf for truly cold days – a rarity in California but useful on occasion. The alpaca boucle from Loewe is quite chic.

My favorite shoe to gain a little height is a heeled loafer. I wear them frequently with jeans and trousers. The Bottega Veneta Monsieur in black and The Row soft loafer in brown are both supremely comfortable. But for something a little dressier, a pump projects a more refined style. I’m eyeing Gabriela Hearts’s sculptural GORGEOUS Sofia pump and The Row’s equally fabulous glossed low heel pump as contenders. Both are under 3″ which is my max. Jeans, trousers, dresses or skirts all work beautifully here.
