As a Family Assistant with a Nanny background, I will be splitting my duties for the summer. I will be working as a Nanny but still doing Family Assistant tasks when the child is at summer camps.

Before he was out of school I worked on wrapping up some of the projects I had. Unfortunately this was my last super productive day before I got sick and was off work for a few days. Sorry I was MIA!

One of my favorite tasks is running errands for the family. I generally try to schedule them all on one day so I can plan the best route and be as effective as possible. I typically will run them in the mornings that way there’s less of a chance of something coming up.

I also like doing little thoughtful things for the mom, like filling her car up with gas. I never let her car get below 1/2 a tank and I always have it filled for the weekend. The same goes for the cleanliness of the car — I have worked here long enough to know when it needs cleaned out but I still text her to confirm prior to cleaning.

Now that the child is home for the summer my role will shift to that of a Nanny/Family Assistant. I’m so excited they finally get to see what fun summer camps I signed them up for back in February!!

Spend a Tuesday morning with me as a Family Assistant catching up after a long weekend traveling to Florida. I always start my week checking in with the family about the plans for the week and seeing what they need. I also immediately start the laundry, I find the best way to maximize my time is to get the laundry going.

Once I have a handle on the laundry it is time to take inventory of items they ran out of, are running low on and what I will need for dinners. I go to our recipe binder and a few different websites they are subscribed to and find ones that sound interesting. All morning it is shuffling laundry around, folding, putting away and then the afternoon I’m off running to the different grocery stores. I typically go to both Kowalski’s and Lunds & Byerlys as they both have specific foods they love.

What is an area of your home that could use a whole new level of organization?

For the family I work for, it was this extra storage space for their serving dishes, trays and platters. They have lived in this home for several years and - to put it simply - were playing a game of Jenga every time they needed an item.

The mom had asked me to help think of a solution that would allow them to use their air rights. I looked at various styles including pull out cabinet organizers, and expandable shelves but in the end I knew the best way to maximize the space was to build a custom solution for them.

I know that this is definitely outside of the normal skillset for a Family Assistant, but I love DIY construction, woodworking and customizing a home to better fit the needs of a person/ family. This is one of my strong skills and a hobby so I decided to bring up my tools and build it once they approved the design and estimate for time & materials.

I used a wide variety of tools to complete this project and worked on it on & off for 3 days. I am so happy with how it turned out! What do you think — is it more useful for them?

What is a big project that you would like done but never seem to find the time to complete?

As a Family Assistant / House Manager my days are never the same and when I don’t have a pressing task to complete, I have the flexibility to choose what I would like to work on.

Over the past weeks I’ve had a variety of tasks that the parents asked me to complete. These included searching for Tupperware and everyday glassware in the basement storage prior to ordering more, taking the patio door screens to the hardware store to be fixed, mail out a bunch of holiday cards and coordinate the sky light repair. During my free time I can work on other projects.

I decided it was time to organize the bedding since I wouldn’t be able to find a matching set easily if I tried. Now that we have the sheet, pillowcases and duvets organized by style we can easily see what we have and what is ripped, stained or old.

I love getting to work on projects like this! It’s one of my favorite things

We spent the weekend celebrating the moms in our lives -our own moms and my sister! We picked beautiful lilacs that were blooming on my parents property and created some very fragrant centerpieces.

Sunday Reset my house with me!

As a Family Assistant / House Manager I come home from work often not wanting to do more laundry, organize a closet or tidy up my own house after I have spent all day doing similar tasks, so I like to take a 2-3 hours over the weekend to try and get my house cleaned.  
I tackle all of the laundry - this includes our colors, whites, blankets, dog toys and our bedding. I wash our bedding once a week minimum since Moose sleeps in bed with us. I just washed it on Friday thankfully so I only had 5 loads to do instead of 7.

I am not a fan of cleaning bathrooms… I mean is anyone? Kyle cleans the bathrooms but I noticed the vanity needed wiped down and the mirrors were showing spots so I added that to my list.

I am a firm believer in working smarter, not harder and my iRobot vacuum and mop duo MegaMaid and Minion allow me to do other things while they run. They are able to run while we’re at work and therefore always have clean floors even with a dog!

I try to tackle a ‘fun’ project during the weekend as well and today’s project was hanging this acrylic shelf that frees up counter space on my vanity yet still keep my skincare products in sight and convenient to use.

Over the past few weeks we have coined our new meal for Sundays as ‘Steak Sunday’.

A nanny is hired to care for the children. A Family Assistant is hired to care for the entire family.
A Family Assistant will cook dinner for the entire family.
They will run errands for everyone -- dry cleaning, oil changes, returns, grocery shopping, car washes, you name it
A Family Assistant will do the entire families laundry
They will set up appointments for the children, house and parents
A Family Assistant will check emails, pick up lunch, schedule home repairs, appointments and much more. A Nanny typically will manage administrative tasks relating to the children for example; setting up play dates, scheduling a doctor appointment etc.
Family Assistants can cater to any event or gathering you need planned. They can find venues, catering, create invites and more.
The beauty of hiring a Family Assistant is you get to choose what they do for your family and what they don’t.

Do you love cooking but hate planning out the week? They can handle the planning & shopping. You don’t like cooking but want to select your meals? Then have them cook and you plan!

That’s the beauty of having a Family Assistant. According to Zip Recruiter the average pay is between $18-67/hr depending on location, experience, hours and tasks.
