106. American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins :: 4.75/5⭐️ Lydia and her son Luca live comfortable with her husband in Acapulco, Mexico and when a drug cartel murders her entire family at her nieces quincenera, she and Luca flee north to escape their own fate. This immaculately written book tells the story of their journey, who they meet and what happens as they try to escape to the United States. I kept seeing this book on Libby and passed it by so many times thinking I wasn’t going to like it. Then I saw its 4.3 star rating on good reads and decided to give it a try, and I’m SO glad I did!! This book really had my heart beating, and I really felt the characters pain, anguish, and fear. I expected it to be sad, but it wasn’t. It kind of reminded me a little bit of The Hate U Give. I highly recommend if you’re a fan of that book too.
