You can’t change life from happening. The only real power in this world we have is to choose our response to it. This gives you the grace and time to heal. I stopped asking God why me a long time ago. God doesn’t make mistakes. Without the relationship I have with depression, I don’t know that I would be the type of compassionate person I am. And I understand that on the days that I look in the mirror and don’t recognize myself, I know that the screenplay of my life still needs to be written, and perhaps even deserves a sequel.

Women do not come with an expiration date and neither does our sexual well-being. Just because we age, we will not be forced into hiding. Stop telling us we are too old to be sexy or anything else less than WHAT we are. There is no unwritten law to censure us or keep us from being WHO we are. We are women, and we are ageless in what we are capable of. Sexiness exudes from acceptance of one’s self, and isn’t that the ultimate definition of sexy? Remember age is just a number; feeling good about yourself, however old you are, is priceless. As for me, I’m with a man 16 years my senior who thinks I’m totally hot. He also tells people he married the babysitter, and you know what? I’m perfectly fine with that.

It’s late July. In my part of the world, the hydrangeas are starting to bloom, sweaters and boots have been stored away, and all the men in my neighborhood have taken vacation time to dedicate themselves 24/7to fighting the battle of the weeds. Snow shovels have been exchanged for lawn movers, which will buzz perpetually until those are swapped for leaf blowers. It’s the suburban circle of life.

In the South, conversations like “Come on in! Busy? Me? No! Sit right down here in my favorite chair and keep me up all night and drink all my liquor. Can I run out and kill our last chicken and fry her up for you? No? Wouldn’t take a minute. Are you sure? Oh, don’t let the chicken hear you. She’ll be so disappointed,” are the normal cadence. I am proud to be from the South, where tea is sweet and accents are sweeter; summer starts in April; front porches are wide and words are long; macaroni and cheese is a vegetable; pecan pie is a staple; Y’all is the only proper pronoun; chicken is fried and biscuits come with gravy; everything is darling and someone is always getting their heart blessed.

A debate is raging over what constitutes a “correct” salade Niçoise. To the purists, the rules are very clear: no vinegar, no lettuce, no fresh tuna, and absolutely no boiled vegetables, like potatoes or green beans. If you try to add any of these, you will be labeled as a heretic and sent to hell for your sins. To everyone else, any and all additions are fair game. Everyone in my family was a member of the Picky-Eater Club. I did not receive an invitation – people with adventurous taste buds need not apply. We all know a picky eater or two but imagine growing up in a home where you’re the only one who isn’t.
