Finspan Quick Thoughts: Over the weekend we shared that we were getting in a few plays of Finspan, the third game in the Wingspan universe. Here’s our answers to the most common questions we received. Is it easier than Wingspan? Less complex? First, and most importantly, Finspan does not feel significantly easier than Wingspan. In fact, parts of the game feel more in line with Wyrmspan level mechanics. The difficulty level of Finspan feels like a distinction without a difference. If you’ve been playing Wingspan and/or Wyrmspan, the knowledge and familiarity from those two games will definitely make picking up and playing Finspan easier, but if you have no experience in the “Span” universe, I wouldn’t expect it to be that much easier to learn than Wingspan. Is there anything new or is it Wingspan with fish? Finspan does a few new things. Notably, we quite enjoyed the new take on egg laying where you put out an egg, hatch it into a fish, and then work to gather three fish into a group to form a school. This could easily have been made into its own standalone game (originally titled “Schools” obvi) and it’s the most unique part of Finspan. Is it worth having if we already have Wingspan? I think Finspan is different enough to be worth playing, but it still scratches the same itch as Wingspan. If you aren’t a fan of this style, Finspan isn’t going to change your mind. If you are a fan, I think you’ll enjoy having this addition to the Span world on your shelves. The new take on familiar mechanics has me wondering if I might just like Finspan more than Wingspan.
