This was my original design of the pantry — completely out of my head, on my paper. I wanted it to feel like a custom walk-in pantry, but really we had only budgeted wire shelves figuring that we would have to built it ourselves in the years to come.
But I had dreamed this up — cubbies for wine crates and wine bottle storage up above. Plus lots of upper and lower cabs and open shelves.
Just out of curiosity, we got a quote from our local building supplier — a low to mid-level cabinet supplier, nothing too wild. With cabinets and counters for this space, they quoted over $10k, which was WELL over my low budget given that this was an addition.
I tried to come up with different ways that we could put this together and make it work. Long story short — we figured out a way to use affordable Home Depot cabs and how to craft the custom spaces out of dishwasher panels. YUP — Dishwasher panels! There are 17 in this design (seriously), which make up the open cubbies.
And for my favorite part of the space… original wine crates from France!! We got them from (drumroll please) — Costco!!! They are the original boxes that their wine gets delivered in from the wineries and was actually their trash after unloading the wine onto the shelves.
This affordable alternative design allowed our pantry to come to life! Instead of just being plain wire shelves… Thanks @homedepot!
