AUTHOR FEATURE

It’s my mission to read through Sarah Adams’ backlist books. So I recently listened to The Match and The Enemy republications (thank you @librofm for the #gifted copy)!

Overall, both books were a solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I enjoyed the dual narration for each audiobook. The setting was adorable and perfect 👏🏻

In The Match, I loved the single dad trope - it’s always a winner. This one also had really incredible disability rep. And I also really appreciated Evie’s “found family” journey.

For The Enemy - you know I love a good enemies-to-lovers trope. 💯 the banter between June and Ryan was hysterical, but I loved how sweet they were, too. And I lived vicariously through their chef and bakery owner professions, because I can barely make toast. Loved it 💕

If you’re looking for a pair of books to traumatize you for the next few decades and keep you from ever leaving home…I suggest reading Worst Case Scenario and Nuclear War.

Worst Case Scenario is a fiction read, in which an airplane crashes into a nuclear power plant. Chaos ensued. People died. I cried. It was action-packed and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Nuclear War is non-fiction and details what would happen minute-by-minute if the U.S. was under nuclear attack. I work in D.C. and was especially traumatized by the graphic depiction of a nuclear attack on the nation’s capital. No thanks. Working from home forever now.

Both of these are solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and I definitely recommend.

Happy Wednesday! I’m very behind on book reviews, so today I’m going to share reviews for 3 recent horror/thriller books I read:

☀️ Sundial ☀️
Uhhhh…what did I read? I think I liked it but honestly have no idea. The beginning was a bit slow, but I couldn’t stop reading the last 1/3. And the twist at the end?! I should’ve seen it coming! This one was unique and very edgy.

🔥 Only If You’re Lucky 🔥
This wasn’t my favorite by this author, but it was engaging and kept me interested. I liked the dark academia vibes and wasn’t able to predict everything that happened. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the #gifted copy!

👻 We Used To Live Here 👻
I understand why this book has so many 5 ⭐️ reviews. I just don’t think the ending was for me. I NEED ANSWERS. But it was cleverly done, and I learned more by going down a Reddit rabbit hole so… pretty cool.

What Happened to Nina? by Dervla McTiernan

I am telling you - do NOT judge this book by its cover (I’m sorry, but I really don’t understand why they went with this cover). I listened to this book during my vacation, and I couldn’t stop. It was so good.

I loved everything about it, especially the multiple POV and that you know what happened from the beginning. You then just get infuriated listening to the story play out. As a mom, I got so angry reading this one.

It was pretty obvious to me this book was based on Gabby Petito and how her disappearance and murder went viral, resulting in conspiracy theories from armchair detectives, without any regard for her family. You see a lot of that played out in this book and the impact it has.

Also, the audiobook narration was really well done and kept me engaged the entire time. 👏🏻

The God of the Woods by Liz Moore

This one is all the rage this summer and rightfully so. I think it has a little something for everyone - past (1970s)/present transitions, mystery, complicated family dynamics, and rich people behaving poorly.

Overall, I really liked this one, especially on audiobook. The narrator was engaging and really sucked me into the story. I was nervous that I’d be confused with the timeline transitions, but it wasn’t an issue.

Also, the setting - loved it. So atmospheric and perfect for summertime reading!

I will say - it was hard to keep the characters straight at times.

House of Glass by Sarah Pekkanen

I love this author and was very excited to get a #gifted e-book (thank you @stmartinspress)!

This was a quick thriller with a wild premise. I devoured it in a few days and was hooked from the very beginning. I’m a sucker for a “bad seed” premise, so I really enjoyed this one.

I was a little disappointed with the ending. The revelations and final reveals were a little much and too coincidental, but I still liked House of Glass overall.

The Sing Sing Files by Dan Slepian

If you know me at all, you know I’ll never turn down the chance to read a book about the criminal justice system - especially related to wrongful incarceration. So huge thank you to @celadonbooks for the #gifted copy!

It feels weird to say this was a “good” book or I “enjoyed” it, because this part-memoir, part-investigative journalism book revolves around one man’s journey in helping SIX wrongfully imprisoned men get released from Sing Sing Prison in New York.

I don’t really know what to say. It’s infuriating to me that this country is okay with people who are obviously innocent being imprisoned. And making it nearly impossible to gain their freedom because police departments, prosecutors, and judges don’t want to admit they’re wrong?!?!? Make it make sense. I don’t understand how these people are okay with that and think they’re doing their jobs.

Did you know that experts estimate between 1-5% of people in U.S. prisons are innocent? That’s between 20,000 and over 100,000 people.

I appreciate the author writing this book and shedding even more light on the topic. I’m still in awe that he was able to help SIX men in a single prison get their freedom back. I’ll definitely be checking out those Dateline episode and podcasts mentioned in the book.

Always a fan of the ✨ sprinkle of magic in Poston’s books. And I loved the premise. But I didn’t think the narrator was a great fit, and I wasn’t attached to any of the characters.

Love Letters to a Serial Killer by Tasha Coryell

I thought this book would do analyze culture’s true crime obsession and how it impacts victims and families. And if that’s the intent, I think it failed. But it was fast-paced and engaging.

Better by Far by Hazel Hayes

Really enjoyed this one. Very character driven, but I was mesmerized by the author’s narration (and her wonderful Irish accent 💕).

All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker

Holy moly - I know the year is only halfway over, but I’m predicting All the Colors of the Dark as my top fiction read of 2024!

I am still unwell thinking about this book. It made me laugh. It made me sob. It made me question. It left me emotionally damaged. And I loved everything about it.

Saint and Patch are incredible main characters, and the cast of secondary characters is wonderful. I just love them all so much 🥹

This book is 600 pages, but please don’t let that deter you. Every word is important in telling this story that spans decades and connecting all the dots.

This one comes out on June 25 - please go grab a copy!!

I’m a huge Alex Finlay fan and was so excited to receive a #gifted e-book (thank you @minotaur_books)!

This one kept me on my toes the entire time. I didn’t see the twist coming until right before it happened, so that’s a huge plus.

I loved the multiple point of view. It can be tricky to read, but it was done well.
