WEEKEND READS

I am still struggling with a major reading slump, which came during #nonfictionnovember (my fave time of year). But I’m trying to get back into it with a cool (read: disturbing) science book - Gory Details by Erika Engelhaupt.

This book has fascinating chapters on some of the weirdest, most interesting area of science. I’m hooked 👏🏻

📚 BOOK REVIEW 📚

The Coldest Case by Tessa Wegert

If there’s one thing I look forward to each year, it’s the latest book in the Shana Merchant series 🙌🏻

This was book 6 in the series, and I wasn’t sure how Wegert would continue the story, but I really enjoyed it - both the personal storyline and case being solved in book.

I love Shana and Tim (#couplegoals) and am so excited to see their story progress. The case they solved was also interesting - it was a unique twist on a locked room mystery (sort of?). I constantly went back and forth on what was happening. I somewhat guessed the twist, but it was still a really good one.

I highly recommend giving this series a try!

I recently caught up on the Inspector Anjelica Henley series by Nadine Matheson. This is currently one of my favorite crime fiction series, and I’m excited for the next book (I hope it comes out soon!).

The Binding Room (Book 2)

A strong read - the book is over 500 pages, but it doesn’t feel like it. I flew through this and couldn’t wait to see what happened next. The crimes were also unique (idk if that’s the right word, but you know what I mean).

The Kill List (Book 3)

Coincidentally, this book is centered around wrongful conviction, which is a very important topic to me. I liked the plot - also a unique crime angle. The tension between Anjelica, Pellacia, and Rob is becoming very heavy and I hope there’s some sort of resolution on Book 4.

Redeeming Justice by Jarrett Adams

This was yet another incredible read about the criminal justice system and the devastating consequences of wrongful conviction. In his memoir, Adams details his wrongful conviction as a teenager, the 10 years he spent in prison before exoneration, and his journey to becoming a defense attorney.

Adams’ story was heartbreaking, but I very much appreciate his willingness to share his story with readers. I cannot fathom what he went through, but for him to spend a decade in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, and then to be back in the courtroom as the defense attorney?! It’s very inspiring.

If victims of wrongful convictions had an attorney who cares as much as Adams, they likely wouldn’t have been wrongfully convicted.

A powerful memoir, and I enjoyed the audiobook, which is narrated by Adams. Highly recommend!

The Stranger Upstairs by Lisa Matlin

This was a BOTM pick last year, and October was the perfect time to read it. Overall, this was a good popcorn thriller. I wasn’t as scared as I thought I’d be, but still good.

I liked the premise and the setting. I kept forgetting it was set in Australia until the casual references to kangaroos 🦘 in the main character’s backyard.

At times, I thought the events happening between the husband and wife were a bit much (hard to explain without giving too much away). And I had to suspend disbelief to go along with some of the plot points in the book. But the ending was thrilling, and I didn’t fully guess it. Always a bonus!

📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖

Framed by John Grisham and Jim McCloskey is definitely one of my top reads of 2024. It covers 10 stories of wrongful conviction and is, as expected, infuriating and heart breaking.

I’ve heard of some cases covered in the book, but others were new to me. But I learned something from each story. I cried multiple times throughout the book - especially learning some of the men wrongfully convicted are still in prison and one was executed.

My main takeaways:
1. Wrongful conviction happens more often than we’d like to admit. Which I say all the time, but the point still stands.
2. The criminal justice system is not just (I used to say it’s broken, but now I agree with @book.ish.bitch - it’s not; it’s working exactly as it’s intended. 😢 a hard hitting epiphany).
3. Never, ever, ever waive your Miranda rights and speak without a lawyer present. Never. I think every single person in this book did, because they wanted to be helpful to police or didn’t want to look guilty (they weren’t).And look what happened…

The Best Lies by David Ellis

I mean this in the best way possible - this book gave me major whiplash. I was constantly guessing (incorrectly) at what would happen next. It was also just very entertaining and humorous at times. Highly recommend!

Sleep Tight by J.H. Markert

This was a creepy read, perfect for the fall season 👏🏻 nothing beats a good serial killer story! This one was a bit frightening and made me uneasy at times. Overall a good, fast-paced read.

INTERNATIONAL WRONGFUL CONVICTION DAY

Today is the 11th annual Wrongful Conviction Day - a day to raise awareness of the causes and remedies of wrongful conviction and recognize the toll wrongful conviction takes on innocent people and their families.

I really felt the need to acknowledge Wrongful Conviction Day this year. Last week, Missouri executed an innocent man - Marcellus Williams. I’m still so mad and heart broken. There’s a man in Texas who is scheduled to be executed this month - evidence also points to his innocence.

Wrongful conviction happens SO much more than people realize. And once someone is put in prison, it’s nearly impossible for them to regain their freedom. This is the reality of the U.S. criminal justice system.

One of the best ways to help is supporting organizations that work to free the innocent - the Equal Justice Initiative and the Innocence Project are my favorites.

I also think we need to make sure we’re aware of the problem and strive to learn more. To help, I put together a stack of books that talk about wrongful conviction. I’ve read almost all of these (and have seen the ones I haven’t yet read highly recommended).
