DIY Lettuce Bar 🥬

I started these lettuce seeds in a 2” seed starting cell tray on 1/27/25. Let them grow nice and big for 36 days and then potted them into a self-watering table trough that I grabbed at @homedepot

Now I can have lettuce anytime I want without going to my garden! Just snip a few loose leaves and voila! 🪄

This is actually my 4th attempt at lettuce & Im crossing fingers this method works for me. I put it containers last August but since lettuce is a cool season plant, it bolted pretty quick bc we were still in warm season. I tried direct sowing into the ground in September but still too warm and didn’t get great germination. Once I had seedlings, bugs/critters chomped on the baby leaves. I tried again in December with same outcome.

My office stays pretty chilly year-round & I think (and hope) this will be a good spot for my lettuce. They are sitting in an east facing window so they’ll be protected from any hot Texas sun coming into warm & hot season.

🌱Seedling progress - Texas 8b

It’s been a cold few days in my building. I don’t heat my warehouse in the winter. When it gets super cold, it can get in the 40s in there. Especially without having the sun out to warm the structure.

My seedlings have been on the warming mats full time. And my grow lights have been on 16 hours/day. I’ve been running a space heater when I’m in the building…not to try and get them to a specific tent but to just help warm up the air around them. Plus it’s exposing them to a breeze. I also added a sheet on the outside for when that space heater is on to help funnel the warm air.

I just planted another round this past Sunday (5 days ago) and I’m seeing sprouts already with my Morning Stars and a few Nasturtiums. I’m finally seeing some of my Lisianthis seedlings emerge. Dangggg they are tiny!!

I went shopping over the weekend to buy mine, but my garden isn’t quite ready for me to put them in the ground just yet!

So I’m potting them up so they have a cushy place to live until it’s time for them to go into the ground.

🌱Seed babies are doing well for my first attempts

Need some more air flow for sure to combat the algae. And have plenty more seeds to get started (I missed my planting schedule last weekend) this weekend. I will also be sprinkling cinnamon in my seed starting mix for my next seed planting round.

I need to fill in the gaps where my seeds failed to germinate. And I have a few that I need to pot up already…they are my little engines that could 🚂

Let’s grow flowers and food together!! My seed babies are a few weeks old & I’m planting more each week as I get closer to my last frost date.

It’s getting me through the crazy dips in temps we’ve been having in Texas. I’m growing all kinds of fun things!! Starting a flower farm & growing my own food will definitely be a journey!!
