NO SEW RAG FLAG... a great project for kids and adults! My flag has been featured in many magazines including July 2024 Woman’s Day.

Materials Needed:
• Fabric scissors • Various red and white fabrics. • Jumbo Rick Rack (1 1⁄4 in) • Pom Pom garland • Star fabric • 3’ or 4’ stick or wooden rod • Fabric glue

🇺🇸I made a 4’ x 6’ flag to hang from a pergola outdoors although I had enough left over to make a small 2’ x 3’ flag to hang under a tree.

Prep Work:

1. Buy 2 yards of each fabric print and trim.

2. Choose your rod or stick. With a small hand saw, I cut a 4’ tree branch from a tree in our yard. You can also use a dowel rod.

Steps:

1. Cut red and white fabric into 3’ in strips about 2 yards long. (Adjust proportionately if you are making a smaller one.) These strips don’t have to be perfect or even.

2. Alternate red and white strips across the length of the stick...leaving 2-4’ inches of stick bare so that you can hang it up. Tie each strip to the stick making sure to leave the free edge pointing up if you can.

3. After you have all of the red and white fabric tied, tie in some of the rick rack and pom poms.

4. Cut the star fabric to fit your flag proportionately. I cut mine 18” x 24.”

5. After you have your star fabric rectangle, on the top of the shorter side, cut small strips, just at the top, to tie to the stick. (I cut 3’ – 4’ into the fabric.)

6. Tie the strips of the star fabric, amongst the red and the white, to complete the flag.

7. You can fabric glue rick rack along the perimeter of the star fabric to give it a border as I did...or just leave it plain.

8. Take pride in the USA by hanging your crafty creation with twine!

Celebrate summer like we did in Sweden with the traditional strawberry cake and pastel maxi dresses. (My yellow tiered dress was from Saylor 2023 Pink Lemonade print. Google for options.)

SWEDISH STRAWBERRY CAKE

For the cake:
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup light brown sugar
4 large eggs
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk

For the cream cheese frosting:
8 ounces full-fat brick style cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
3 cups (350g) confectioners’ sugar
1 – 2 Tablespoons heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pinch salt

For the filling:
1/2 cup strawberry jam
2 cups fresh strawberries

Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F Grease and lightly flour two cake pans.

Mix butter until creamy. Add both sugars, eggs, vanilla, and beat on medium speed until everything is combined.

In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Add the milk.

Bake for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before assembling the cake.

For the frosting:

Beat cream cheese and butter together. Add confectioners’ sugar, 1 or 2 Tablespoons cream, vanilla extract and salt.

For the filling and assembling the cake:

Trim the tops off the cake layers to create a flat surface. Evenly cover one layer with the jam, then add a layer of sliced strawberries, and one layer of cream cheese frosting. Do the same with second layer then cover the entire top with strawberries.

After one week in Italy, this is what I know..

1. There are a lot of steps and hills. We walked 6 -7 miles a day. Bring small 20” carry-ons and protect them with plastic covers.

2. The roads are very windy and altitudes are high. Bring Dramamine.

3. If you can afford to rent a driver or bait for the day, do that to avoid hours long lines for public transportation.

4. You need comfortable sneakers. Activewear isn’t as popular for day time in Europe so we wore Reef casual sneakers the most. Rubber sole sandals are fine but ruins are dusty and streets can be dirty so keep that in mind.

5. Download Express VPN so your phone doesn’t switch to a foreign language. This will mark your IP address to USA so it stays in English.

6. I commented everyday on how happy I was to have my FP sling bag. It was comfortable and held my water, phone, passport, wallet, makeup bag, charger, travel toilet paper, portable charger and still had room for more.

7. Wear light clothing. It’s HOT and you’re on the go. Activewear isn’t popular for daytime wear there, nor are Jean shorts. We wore a lot of maxi dresses and rompers.

8. Bring toilet paper! I saved myself three times and a few strangers on occasion.

9. Put air tags in everything… your passport, suitcases, purses. Lost luggage and pick pockets are common.

10. For chargers, I love the three in one with multiple ports and then the specific converter linked here for my American products.

**Im also glad I didn’t bring my younger children. I feel like touring is too physically demanding and the appreciation for history is not quite there yet. I saw more moms broken down with strollers and worn out kids more often than not.

Capri Moments….

If you’re looking to spend a day in Capri, we took the ferry over from the Positano Pier and then used @CostanzoCapri to take a boat ride back to our hotel.

Tour the ancient Blue Grotto with @bluegrottotours (must do) and then eat lunch where our guide recommended, @panoramacapri. This is sort of a secret restaurant with beautiful views and not as crowded. Also look at Hotel La Palma, the only five star hotel with a private beach on Capri. They have a patio restaurant and bakery open to the public which is also amazing. Shop at Capri Square… they have everything from Louis Vuitton and Chanel to local boutiques.

We used local guide, Alessandro, who was INCREDIBLE. He has a degree in tourism but is from the area and knows all of the history, places to go and things to see. He also does walking and guided tours of the area.

Grace’s dress is from local Italian @cb_positano , a viral shop here but looks exactly like the Abercrombie dresses (they don’t have AF here so many brands have similar.) My dress is the 2023 LoveShackFancy Ayala (you may be able to find it in other colors) but I linked similar dresses here.

Jenny and Grace take Rome!

We used travel agent, kimberly.watkins@cruiseplanners.com , who partnered with Kensington Tours to plan this entire trip. We stayed at The Inn at the Spanish Steps. Great location, easy to walk to many sites, high end shopping and so many restaurants.

Even though you can wear sandals to tour, I’d recommend sneakers because the cobblestone is uneven and there’s a lot of dirt in the ruins so your feet get dirty.

I wouldn’t recommend kids on a lot of the ancient tours. Hot, long and boring for them I would think.

Crossbody bags are the best because of pick pockets. I linked my Free People one, and the Amazon inspired version, below.

Touring day in Rome!!!

I got the romper in an XS and because it’s short, I probably could have used a small. (For reference, I’m almost 5’8.”)

My Free People bag in beige is sold out but there are other colors and Amazon versions linked.

Also, this strapless bra held me in place all day long and I’m a 32D so there’s some weight there. It’s my favorite active strapless bra.
