Designing dorm rooms and teen spaces can be overwhelming ... but here's an easy way to break it down using 5 budget-friendly essentials from @walmart ! (I'll be donating everything here to a freshman student in need. Details at the bottom of the caption.)

1. Start with a pillow headboard for an elevated look. Use double-sided tape to stick against the wall if needed.

2. Layer a neutral duvet cover with a colored comforter for a pop of color and softness.

3. Hang two smaller pieces of art, one longer print or a round, lightweight mirror above the bed.

4. Place a rug in between two twin beds in a traditional dorm room or a larger rug under a full bed. I ADORE this boho blush rug I found for roughly $50 at Walmart!

5. Add pillows! I like to style three plush accent pillows on top of shams for added comfort!

My daughter and I refreshed her college space with a feminine, coastal 2 hour makeover with Pottery Barn and Love Shack Fancy's limited collection.

We added a new rug, layered two comforters, hung gold, arched mirrors, swapped out the old curtains for eyelet one and styled an oversized mirror for the perfect try-on session!

Doing the most with boys who want the least!

Styling a boy's dorm is a bit tougher than girl's dorm in our home but here are 5 things you can do to make a young man's room feel like home without being over the top.

1. Get a 5x7 rug and style it horizontally under the end of the bed. This helps keep floors clean and anchors the space. If there's a common space, add a rug in there as well.

2. Canvas nightstands. Use these in a closet or as a nightstand with 2 drawers. Lightweight, convenient and inexpensive.

3. Comfortable seating. Add swivel chairs and an upholstered desk chair for a more inviting space to study and meet new friends.

4. Easy to wash bedding. Duvet covers and light weight quilts are easy to wash and keep clean.. should they make the effort.

5. Command Hooks.. No dorm room is complete without them. Use them to hang art, hats, belts and curtains within closets to hide the mess!

This is a bit Hemingway inspired but you can change out the accent to sports, music, hobbies, etc.

As Grace and I continue our college apartment styling journey today, I'm dropping little words of wisdom among the way. What is the best advice you ever received as a young adult OR what is the life lesson you wish you could have told your 19 year old self?

Last fall, Grace's dorm went viral and appeared in Southern Living, HGTV and Seventeen Magazine. While we're planning for "My First Apartment" this year, I thought I'd recap a few dorm must-haves if you'red college bound this year. (All of these products are linked in the dorm highlight.)

✨ Style specifically for dorm furniture. Many of the accents here are from Room422, who designs makes bedding for dorm rooms. The longer bed skirt, stick on headboard, tasseled throw and larger pillows for studying were essential in creating this polished space.

✨ IKEA's Alex drawer units are $159 worth of storage Heaven in a dorm room. Gender neutral, these smaller towers can hold everything from undies to leggings to school supplies.

✨ Create a battery operated chandelier with a remote control, puck light and pendant. We simply twisted in a screw hook to the ceiling and hung. You can also do this with a command hook.

✨ Make a space feel like HOME with a small rug and greenery. Dorm carpet is gross. Add color and a layer of softened with a flat weave rug.

✨ Shop small and purchase prints from an artist, for under $10, on Etsy and then send those to Smallwood Homes to be framed. Alternatively, find a collection of matching prints from HomeGoods and hang in a gallery.
