Style or fashion - which camp do you sit in?

Do you buy into trends just because it’s a trend, or do you consider your own personal style first and foremost?

If you don’t know your style and you flit from trend to trend then that can make for a confused wardrobe that doesn’t necessarily equate to wearable outfits and that doesn’t necessarily represent who you are.

So when you hit the shops ask yourself these questions to ensure what you buy does work for you on all levels:

🛍️ Does it fit my style?

🛍️ Does it work for my shape/proportions etc?

🛍️ Does it work for my lifestyle?

🛍️ Can I wear it in lots of different ways and across different seasons?

🛍️ Does it make me happy/do I love it?

So let’s take the full cotton skirt trend - I have bought into it because it ticks the boxes above for me 🙌

The evolution of an outfit…

How do you get from basic to styled?

These are the simple steps I go through in nearly every outfit I put on and this formula works irrespective of whether you are creating a smart, casual or smart casual look.

Not every step will always be necessary and what the individual pieces are will obviously change but if you’re feeling like your looks are basic and you want to up your style game then this may help. One to save 📌

1. Tuck
2. Add a belt
3. Add jewellery
4. Layer
5. Roll/ruche sleeves
6. Footwear that compliments the outfit
7. A bag that also compliments the outfit

Pretty broderie blouse. Also in red. Wearing XS and it’s a relaxed fit so I’d recommend sizing down. They do XXS online which would be good for a size 6/8

Elevated basics …

These are often the key to a great wardrobe because they combine the versatility and wearability of a basic with a little bit of detailing to create some interest.

Don’t get me wrong basics are the strong solid foundations of any wardrobe but these more interesting items can stop your outfits from feeling flat and boring.

I’ve taken 4 different items - a white blouse, a button detail knit, a cheesecloth blouse and a jersey puff sleeve top all of which fall into this category and have worn them in various ways hopefully to demonstrate the point!!

This is a great skirt - perfect if you’re struggling with all the satin skirt styles out there. Ideal if you’re curvier. The mesh falls beautifully so doesn’t add width. They didn’t have my usual size so this is a bit big. I have tried on a
Small and would usually wear xs so this is probably good for size 10 approx

Moving your wardrobe from winter❄️ towards spring🌼

Here are some simple swaps and small additions you can make to your wardrobe to start the transition to a new season

1. Lighten up your coats and jackets - that doesn’t mean you need to be cold as it’s still about layering!!

2. Swap in some lighter neutrals for your accessories

3. Camel and tan are perfect pairings for this time of year

4. Brown is another gorgeous option and so much softer than black.

5. Grey and camel combos feel much lighter and fresher

6. Try swapping black out and wear navy instead.

7. Add in khaki as another great neutral.

4 spring wardrobe essentials …

1. Nothing says spring like navy so make a simple swap and move away from black base layers to navy. The navy trouser is a versatile piece you can pair with so many other colours - not just neutrals. And yes you can pair navy and black together!!!

2. In the same vein - a navy blazer looks great with denim and is a fresher alternative to black.

3. The white tee - the base of so many looks for the next few months, even if it’s under a sweater for a while yet!

4. Blue denim - another foundation of my spring wardrobe in different shapes and for sunny days I love a light blue wash too.

There are plenty more foundations and I’ll be doing a whole series of spring foundations over the coming weeks from footwear to outerwear and more so stay tuned 🌱🌱🌱🌱
